An untouched West African Paradise of ancient forests, pristine beaches, and vibrant, crystal-clear waters

With an address at 1°N, 7°E, the striking island of Príncipe is about as close to the centre of the world as it gets. This small island is home to some of the planet’s most extraordinary biodiversity. But like many natural treasures, it faces significant challenges – from environmental pressures to limited opportunities for its communities.

Together, we’re protecting what makes Príncipe so special – preserving its beauty and biodiversity for generations to come. This is only the beginning of what’s possible.

"The natural beauty of Príncipe is enchanting, and our duty is to preserve it."

A Lively Mix: The Population of Príncipe

The rich tapestry of African culture runs deep, with the majority of the population being descendants of Cape Verdeans, Angolans, and Mozambicans who once worked on the Portuguese-run plantations during and after the times of slavery.

These ancestors brought with them a unique blend of African culture and traditions.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

In 2012, the efforts of HBD Príncipe, Mark Shuttleworth’s sustainable development company, led to Príncipe Island being designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a testament to our commitment to preserving the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

All the way through, we have been working collaboratively to develop the island in a responsible manner, creating opportunities for local communities while respecting their culture, traditions, and the fragile natural environment.
