Nature, like any valuable asset, needs investment to thrive. Príncipe Island’s unique biodiversity exists thanks to decades of dedication from its people. We believe these communities deserve to benefit from their conservation efforts, which is why we’re offering a financial dividend as recognition for preserving this natural treasure. This dividend not only rewards their commitment but also encourages ongoing biodiversity protection, ensuring sustainable benefits for the future. We’re confident that this model will empower the local community to invest in conservation and protect Príncipe’s rich biodiversity for generations to come.
The FAYA Foundation, a non-profit funded by entrepreneur and sustainability advocate Mark Shuttleworth, will handle all payments for the Natural Dividend. The Foundation is committed to making these payments regularly and transparently.
While the dividend amount is still being finalized, it will reflect a percentage of the annual average income of Príncipe's inhabitants, with payments being made quarterly. Unlike government-funded programs, this is a private initiative focused on preserving Príncipe’s natural heritage, while becoming a global example of how economic development and conservation can thrive together.
This voluntary program is open to anyone over 18 who has lived on Príncipe Island for at least eight years and shares our commitment to preserving its natural resources and biodiversity. The Natural Dividend celebrates and rewards the community’s dedication to protecting the island’s greatest treasure: its environment.
The payment amount and program conditions are being developed collaboratively with experts in social sciences, environmental studies, and technology. We work closely with the Regional Government of Príncipe and local communities to ensure the plan reflects the island's needs on an ongoing basis.
Quarterly payments will be made directly to participants' bank accounts. For those without accounts, the Natural Dividend Foundation has partnered with a local bank to provide free account setup, covering all fees.
Once the program meets its goals on Príncipe, Mark Shuttleworth aims to expand it globally, fostering a more sustainable future. This commitment goes beyond economics—it’s about creating a positive impact for people and the planet. We’ll track key metrics closely to stay on course, make adjustments as needed, and keep all stakeholders informed, reinforcing our progress together.
